--

Our grandparents always had some kind of superstitious comment or saying about everyday events. Don’t think that these don’t exist anymore! Here are 5+1 superstitions that many people still believe in!

Various superstitions and beliefs formed the everyday life of people in the old days. Nowadays, less and less people believe in them, but there are still many people who give credit to the various beliefs. Here are some superstitions that are still popular today!

Black cat

Perhaps the most popular superstition that lives in many people to this day. According to the rumor, if it runs across the road from left to right in front of us, then we will have bad luck, but if it runs from right to left, then we will be lucky. Many people think that if it happens first, then it is worth waiting until the cat returns to the other side of the road, thus neutralizing the “curse”.

Ladder

The open ladder forms a triangle and brings bad luck to anyone who walks under it, unless they cross their fingers while doing so.

Salt

The spread of salt is also very popular. According to this superstition, accidentally spilling salt will cause annoyance or quarrels. However, we can avoid all this by throwing a pinch of salt over our left shoulder.

Mirror

In Hungarian folklore, luck avoids a house in which a mirror breaks for seven years. It’s not over yet: it doesn’t matter who breaks the mirror! Because the person who is responsible for it does not marry for seven years. Of course, there is relief here too: if the mirror shards are collected and buried in the moonlight, the bad luck will disappear.

Wallet

Giving someone an empty wallet is a bad wish among the superstitious. Why? According to the belief, the giver will never become rich in this way. That’s why there should always be at least some money in the wallet that we give away.

+ Lucky bone

At the Sunday soup, many people wonder whose plate the lucky bone will land on. There is a saying about the two-pronged thinner bone that if two people break it, while both wish for something, then the person with the longer bone will have their wish come true.
