According to the latest data from International Data Corp. (IDC), China’s smartphone shipments rose 6.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter.

The market is dominated by the five largest manufacturers. Honor, formerly part of Huawei, leads the list with a market share of 17.1 percent, with an annual growth of 13.2 percent. Close behind is Huawei with a 17 percent share, whose shipments jumped 110 percent, largely due to strong demand for the top-of-the-line Mate 60 model. OPPO follows with 15.7 percent.

Apple achieved a share of 15.6 percent with the iPhone, which means a decline compared to the previous year and a drop from the previous year’s second place. Vivo rounds out the top five with a 14.6 percent share.

According to IDC’s analysis, the Lunar New Year contributed to an increase in the desire to buy – especially interest in lower and mid-range products. In the market of higher-end phones, AI technology and novelties of foldable devices have given Android device manufacturers the opportunity to

further distinguish themselves from Apple.

IDC highlighted: “Apple’s quarterly price promotions were unable to offset the pressure of intense competition from Android competitors.”

Apple is expected to release its March quarter financial results on May 2.
