While the thermal efficiency of most diesel engines on the market hovers around 46 percent, Chinese researchers have now reached 53.09 percent. This can lead to significantly lower power consumption.

While the world’s automotive industry is already winking towards electric and hydrogen drives, internal combustion drivetrains are not being forgotten either. The transition will not happen overnight, and the existing gasoline and diesel engines must be developed in the meantime.

Chinese researchers have apparently produced the world’s first diesel engine, with a thermal efficiency (heat output) of 53.09 percent, writes the Interesting Engineering.

The engine, which is more efficient than ever before, compliments the work of Weichai Power’s engineers and was unveiled at an internal combustion engine conference. The development has already been certified by TÜV SÜD and a Chinese testing organization.

The thermal efficiency is the percentage value that the diesel engine itself can convert into useful performance, without using heat loss. The better the thermal efficiency, the more economical the given engine is, it explains Interesting Engineering.

Weichai Power is constantly pushing the boundaries of diesel technology: the current efficiency of 53.09 percent is not their first record either, they got there gradually. An efficiency of 50.23 percent was achieved in 2020 and 51.09 percent in 2022, and the current record is preceded by a value of 52.28 percent in November 2022.

Most diesel engines have a thermal efficiency of 46 percent; even 52.28 percent would mean a 12 percent reduction in consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Weichai Power specialists spent more than 500 days optimizing four vital systems. These are fuel supply, air supply, combustion, and friction reduction.

According to the researchers, the achieved efficiency is comparable to a runner completing the 100-meter distance in 9 seconds.

The environment can benefit the most from the development, since the efficient drive chain can be installed in all diesel-powered vehicles and work equipment, which is 14 percent more efficient than its counterparts currently on the market.
