Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ 2024

--

Now it makes sense that Mercedes recently replaced the G-Class much earlier than was justified. The new construction made it possible to present the first purely electric version of the series, the exact name of which we do not know: the manufacturer only talks about it as “Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology”, but it is not something striking, with this name surely few will be looking for it in dealerships.

Even if its appearance is old-fashioned, the electrified G-Class received the most sophisticated drive possible. All four wheels are driven by a separate electric motor. They are completely identical, the system output is 432 kW, i.e. 588 horsepower, and the combined peak torque is 1164 Nm. The car with a ready-to-go weight of more than 3 tons accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and its top speed is maximized at 180 km/h.

The four electric motors can partly be the guarantee of perfect off-road suitability, since the amount of torque can be regulated per wheel, i.e. the differential lock can be simulated in all conditions (front, rear, middle).

It is also true, however, that not only the degree, but also the direction of the drive can be changed for each wheel. Thus, the electric Geländewagen can even turn around on the spot. The system is willing to do this a maximum of twice at a time, after the 720-degree turn, the function turns off to protect the structure.

A less extreme version of this helps with traditional steering, narrowing (but not zeroing) the radius of the turning circle. This is also only allowed on loose ground and can be used up to a maximum of 25 km/h.

There is a splitter (per wheel, of course, and specifically with a 2:1 ratio), as well as a three-speed creep function, the latter of which are automatically activated when the splitter is switched on. In this case, the top speed is 85 km/h.

In any case, field suitability is structurally a strength of the newcomer. On the one hand, because it still uses a (modified) ladder frame and a (newly designed) rigid rear axle. On the other hand, because the deep center of mass resulting from the huge battery pack stabilizes it as a capital weight: depending on the surface, it thrives even on 100% (45°) inclines, and its maximum angle (side inclination) is 35°.

The ground clearance between the axles is 250 mm, the ground angles from front to back are 32 / 20.3 / 30.7 degrees. The wading depth is 850 mm, which is exactly 150 mm better than the version equipped with an internal combustion engine.

To distinguish it from these, the designers raised the hood and created an air curtain on the rear wheel arches. Optional is the shiny black panel replacing the cooling mask, as well as the box that can be installed in place of the spare wheel, which is otherwise used to store the charging cable.

There is no shortage of electronic services, there is the usual MBUX infotainment system on board, keyless entry and start, heated cup holders, and a “transparent bonnet” function that displays the area around the front axle with a camera. The offroad terrain menu is optional.

There is no engine sound, but there are unique sound characters and the G-Roar function that simulates the roar of AMG models.

The Edition One edition, available at the time of launch, was generously equipped with extras, which is reflected in the purchase price: while the basic version starts at 142,000 euros (approx. 57 million HUF), the limited series is almost 50,000 euros, 20 million HUF more expensive.

The battery with a net capacity of 116 kWh was integrated into the ladder frame built from elements with a wall thickness of 4 mm. The battery housing is shock and moisture resistant and twist-free. The range is 473 kilometers, the car can be charged with up to 200 kW. The regenerative braking system can be adjusted in three stages and can also be switched off.

The protection of the battery and the drive chain is ensured by a 26 mm thick panel containing carbon composite and weighing only 57 kilos; a separate 1 mm thick layer ensures protection against stone impacts.
