It is not possible to bet from Monday, users can log into their account until December 4.

“Following a review of our operations, we regret to inform you that on November 20, 2023, we will suspend our services for the residents of your country” – this is what the Hungarian users were informed by the 444 according to UK-based Bet365.

An e-mail sent out on Friday reached the paper, according to which

• all bets already made but not closed by November 17 will remain valid, they will be settled “in the usual way”, the winnings will be credited to the customer’s account;
• however, new bets cannot be placed with them after November 20;
• customers can log in to their user account until December 4, and can only initiate payments from their account until then.

It is not yet clear whether one of the world’s largest online gambling companies has informed all Hungarian users about this.

It is certain, however, that the website of the gambling company, a 444we also experienced that the browser throws an error message “www.bet365.com has not been responding for too long”.

Bet365, a Maltese-registered website that does not have a license to organize gambling in Hungary, broadcasts bets, deals with sports bets and casino-type games. The company was founded by Denise Coates, who earned more than HUF 95 billion. Bet365’s turnover – in the financial year to March 29, 2022 – almost reached £3bn, but its pre-tax profit was only close to £50m. In the previous year, the profit was 469 million pounds, and Coates’ salary was almost 250 million pounds, i.e. nearly 112 billion forints.

At the end of 2019, the company had to make its site unavailable in 47 countries around the world that prohibit gambling.

Hungary has also tried to ban online betting in the past – with the exception of the state-owned Szerencsejáték Zrt. and the Habony-Garancsi casino company that entered the online market this spring. Another online casino, Unibet, went to court in 2017 due to the measure at the time and won.

At the same time, as HVG wrote about in detail, this summer the government closed new doors to foreign gambling organizing companies. From then on, Hungarian banks had to automatically reject internet transfer and card payment orders whose code indicated that a foreign gambling organization was behind it, but it was easy to circumvent this with a virtual wallet. At the time, it seemed that under the hypocritical guise of player protection, the government carefully channeled almost every corner of the legal gambling organization – and their huge profits – to the state-owned Szerencsejáték Zrt., and to businessmen who enjoyed the trust of the prime minister.
