It won’t be a problem if the SSD in our handheld console is broken, or if we want a bigger one: Western Digital already offers such a particularly small hard drive, which is also extremely fast.

A small component in a small device: Western Digital has launched a special new SSD on the market, which – due to its size – is especially suitable for handheld consoles such as the Valve Steam Deck or the Asus ROG Ally, writes the Neowin.

The game consoles are equipped with an easily replaceable M.2 SSD on store shelves, but the traditional versions of these are extremely large, so by definition they do not fit in the console.

That’s why we need “shorter” SSD versions in 2230-format edition. Replacing the factory internal storage may be justified in the event of its failure or a larger storage space requirement – however, such small SSDs are relatively rare, so it is certainly welcome that a well-known manufacturer such as Western Digital has released one.

The SN2270M series SSD is PCIe 4.0-based and comes in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB variants. It uses TLC 3D NAND memory chips and can reach up to 5,150 MB/s read and 4,000 MB/s write speeds – making it a solid base for a handheld console.

Depending on the size of the storage, 75, 110 and 220 dollars will be asked for it, i.e. the price of such an SSD will range from approximately HUF 27 to 79 thousand.
